Ajla Terzić: It Could Have Been a Simple Story (Rende, Belgrade, 2011)
By: Leda Sutlović
Ajla Terzić’s novel talks about finding happiness and meaning of life for a generation of thirty-somethings, represented by the unconventional voice of the main character, Esma. In the context of pop culture, popular lyrics, sexual identities, transition in the Balkans, modern technologies, cynicism and irony, the novel sheds some light on the problems of a very specific generation. The protagonist is old enough to remember the war, exile and poverty, but also young enough to get information about socialism from others while enjoying her sophisticated gadgets and fusion food. She is part of a generation that is trying to make a life for themselves somewhere in between, at a mystic crossing where the roasted piglet and iPhone meet. The unlucky ones who cannot do that, are trying to find an answer to the old question – should I stay or should I go.
Oleg Tomić: Hurt (AGORA, Zrenjanin, 2011)
By: Ivan Telebar
Although Oleg Tomić has written a collection of poems, a book of short stories and three novels, Hurt seems like the first novel of an author who is not exactly sure what he wants to achieve with his text. It is a mixture of intrigues and psychological portraits that tell a love story, as the author himself defines in the subtitle. But it is hard to claim that it speaks of a love story, more of fixations that generate other (romantic and mystical) episodes. All that can be found of romance, is the intensive preoccupation of a deranged mind in a body of a mysterious woman. more >

Edo Popović: Breaking The Wind (OceanMore, Zagreb, 2011)
By: Leda Sutlović
Some of the recently published books, which can be categorised as socially active prose, aim to remind us of the unenviable social situation, alongside all the devastating statistics, spiritual, moral and other crises. One of these novels is Edo Popović’s Breaking The Wind. Almost a dystopian but definitely a futuristic transition story that speaks critically of the present-day life and shows its extreme in the future. The novel’s title stands as a metaphor to the greed of the capitalist society which, after another successful acquisition, announces the breaking of the wind. more >
Mirjana Novaković: Tito has Died (Laguna, Belgrade, 2011)
By: Lamija Neimarlija
The main character in Mirjana Novaković’s thriller ‘’Tito has Died’’ (Laguna, 2011) is a dissident alcoholic, a well know journalist of a newspaper Politika, during the previous regime and a marginalised reporter in today’s capitalist Serbia. The novel begins with our hero/storyteller’s unexpected conversation with a communist Nikola Babić, in which she finds out that one number of Politika from 1968, published a very unusual article, in which, the first capital letter of each paragraph reads ‘’Tito has Died’’. The text tells of a theatre play that will start on May 4 at 3.05 p.m. The death of Tito – the great event of the Yugoslavian history – is not the only mystery in this crime story. The tragic death of one of the most perspective members of the Democratic party, Saša Vrtača, is a mystery of a great importance to the Serbian authority and its nation.

Glumice i to, KNAP, Zagreb, premijera 12.5.2012.
